The Enchanted & The Year of Reading Dangerously

At least one of each has been picked, so we’ll have plenty to discuss at the next meeting. We’ve mostly picked The Enchanted, by Rene Denfeld – a novel that appears on the Waterstones company book club selection this quarter, and The Year of Reading Dangerously by Andy Miller as a non-fiction second selection. Who could resist a book about books..?

For Wednesday’s attendees all reserved copies have been put aside, but you couldn’t make it, let Leilah know if you’d like order a copy. Tell the Waterstones Doncaster staff member that you’re with the book club, and they should know to take off the extra pound, disclaimer.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 20th May, 5.20pm for 5.45pm.

Costa have agreed to lend us their carpeted area, and stay on for a short while to serve us drinks and cakes. Any of you that would like to gather earlier to chat, feel free, though I’ll ask you to move to our designated space from 5pm so that Costa can clean up around us.

The Enchanted, Rene Denfeld

The Enchanted, Rene DenfeldEven monsters need peace.

Even monsters need a person who truly wants to listen – to hear – so that someday we might find the words that are more than boxes. Then maybe we can stop men like me from happening…

A prisoner sits on death row in a maximum security prison. His only escape from his harsh existence is through the words he dreams about, the world he conjures around him using the power of language. For the reality of his world is brutal and stark. He is not named, nor do we know his crime. But he listens.

He listens to the story of York, the prisoner in the cell next to him whose execution date has been set. He hears the lady, an investigator who is piecing together York’s past. He watches as the lady falls in love with the priest and wonders if love is still possible here. He sees the corruption and the danger as tensions in ‘this enchanted place’ build. And he waits. For even monsters have a story…

The Year of Reading Dangerously, Andy Miller

The Year of Reading Dangerously by Andy Miller

How Fifty Great Books Saved My Life

A working father whose life no longer feels like his own discovers the transforming powers of great (and downright terrible) literature in this laugh-out-loud memoir.

Andy Miller had a job he quite liked, a family he loved and no time at all for reading. Or so he kept telling himself. But, no matter how busy or tired he was, something kept niggling at him. Books. Books he’d always wanted to read. Books he’d said he’d read, when he hadn’t. Books that whispered the promise of escape from the 6.44 to London.

And so, with the turn of a page, began a year of reading that was to transform Andy’s life completely. This book is Andy’s inspirational and very funny account of his expedition through literature: classic, cult and everything in-between.

Crack the spine of your unread ‘Middlemarch’, discover what ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘Moby-Dick’ have in common (everything, surprisingly) and knock yourself out with a new-found enthusiasm for Tolstoy, Douglas Adams and ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh’. ‘The Year of Reading Dangerously’ is a reader’s odyssey and it begins with opening this book…
